Welcome to Lights On
Welcome to Lights On
Our Lights On Afterschool program got off to a slow, somewhat scary start. Well, let me back up and explain! The site director, Ny Chamberlain, had only been on board approx. two weeks. She is doing an excellent job of setting great standards for the staff and youth of the program. In just the second week of programming, everyone is making progress, but still getting adjusted. So we thought about what could we do to further engage the students as well as their parents who would be invited to our "Open House/Chat & Chew". Who better to involve in the decision than the children? As soon as they were posed with the question, just about all voted to share with visitors the their new Y' Boost Chant. It involves clapping, stepping and having fun! Volunteers practiced one day and were ready to do the welcome for parents! Only at 5:00pm when guest were do to arrive....the gym was empty. Groups were into their elective exericses and ready to let visitors see what they are excited about when they go home, but still at 5:20PM there was no one. Kids and staff were getting a little worried that no one would show until.... 5:26 when the first group of parents and caregivers arrived. Then visitors gradually came in, enjoying refreshments compliments of the Community School Office and completed parent surveys. It was all coming together. The group of 7 girls and 5 boys got everyone's attention. Shatera yelled,"I don't think you're ready"...The rest yelled, "Well how ready are you". Shatera replied,"Well, I'm all pumped up too"...Others yelled, "Well, I'm a leader in this, I set goals all day!" Then a group cheered, "Which set do you rep'?" All cheered the "YMCA!" That set the tone and everyone seemed to beentertained. The Site Director gave an upbeat overview of the program calendar, introduced staff and welcomed guest to look in on their youngsters in group activities. The evening was a success!
